State Parks You Need to Visit Near New Market, Virginia

When you stay at Little Nest, New Market, you’re already so close to all that Shenandoah National Park has to offer.

But did you know there are also several Virginia State Parks within an hour’s drive of New Market that are also worth your time? These parks offer quieter trails, unique activities, and a chance to see a different side of the Shenandoah Valley. Whether you’re looking for a lakeside picnic, a waterfall hike, or a peaceful morning on the river, these parks are well worth a visit.

Here are a few of our favorite nearby state parks, complete with travel times, must-see spots, and food stops to keep you fueled.

Seven Bends State Park

Distance from New Market: 25 minutes

One of Virginia’s newest state parks, Seven Bends State Park in Woodstock is named for the meandering bends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. It’s a haven for hiking, fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching.

What to Do:

  • Hike the Eagle’s Edge Trail (1.5 miles) for a moderate climb with sweeping valley views.
  • Paddle the North Fork if you have a kayak or canoe (launch access is available).
  • Pack a picnic to enjoy by the riverside.

  • Woodstock Café (10 minutes away) – Known for fresh salads, hearty sandwiches, and excellent coffee.
  • Brewbaker’s Restaurant in Woodstock – Great for casual burgers and craft beer.
  • Woodstock Brewhouse in Woodstock - Great brewery in a historic, industrial setting.
  • Muse Vineyards right next door - For stunning views and fantastic wines.

Shenandoah River State Park

Distance from New Market: 35 minutes

If you love river views, this park is a gem. Shenandoah River State Park near Bentonville offers 24 miles of hiking and biking trails and over 5 miles of shoreline along the South Fork of the Shenandoah.

What to Do:

  • Walk the Cottonwood Trail, an easy riverside loop perfect for wildlife spotting.
  • Explore the Overlook Trail for a 1 mile hike to see a stunning view of the river and valley.
  • For a little more adventure, hike the Bear Bottom Loop Trail (2.1 miles) through wooded hills.
  • Enjoy a riverside picnic or launch a kayak.

  • Broad Porch Coffee in Luray - for great coffee and light brunch snacks.
  • West Main Market downtown Luray for fantastic sandwiches, local brews, and wonderful outdoor seating.

  • Blue Shepherd's Spirits in Luray - A local distillery with a great food truck right on premise for post-hike lunch.

Natural Bridge State Park

Distance from New Market: 1 hour

A little further out, but absolutely worth the trip, is Natural Bridge State Park. This park is home to the famous 215-foot-tall limestone arch that was once owned by Thomas Jefferson and considered one of the “wonders of the natural world.”

What to Do:

  • Stroll the Cedar Creek Trail, which runs under the Natural Bridge and past a waterfall.
  • Explore the Monacan Indian Living History Exhibit (seasonal).
  • Take time to enjoy the visitor center and history displays.

Where to Eat Nearby:

  • Pink Cadillac Diner (classic retro diner just a few minutes away).
  • Natty B Café & Natural Bridge General Store – A cozy spot for sandwiches and baked goods.
  • Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery - for some stunning views and quick munchies on your way back. 

Sky Meadows State Park

Distance from New Market: 1 hour

If you’re looking for rolling meadows, pastoral views, and wide-open skies, Sky Meadows State Park near Delaplane is a must. It’s especially stunning in spring and fall. Plus - if you're heading from Northern Virginia or DC, you can make this as a great pit stop on your way to New Market or on your way home. 

What to Do:

  • Hike the Piedmont Overlook Trail (1.6 miles) for sweeping views of farmland and mountains.
  • Connect to the Appalachian Trail, which runs through the park.
  • Bring binoculars—Sky Meadows is a birding hotspot.

Where to Eat Nearby:

  • Delaplane Cellars (10 minutes away) – Enjoy wine with a view after your hike.
  • Market Salamander in Middleburg – A gourmet café perfect for picking up picnic supplies.
  • Hunter's Head Tavern in Uppervile - Historic pub with Afternoon tea, pet friendly patio, and delicious food.
