Hillside House at Shenandoah

A Perfect Day in Shenandoah National Park: Trails, Views & Brews

If you're staying at Hillside House, you’re already in the perfect spot to explore the best of Shenandoah National Park and the surrounding valley. Located just 15 minutes from the Thornton Gap Entrance, our cozy, scenic retreat offers easy access to morning coffee, unforgettable hikes, picnic views, and relaxing post-trail sips—without spending your whole day in the car.

Here’s how to enjoy a perfect day in the park, starting and ending with comfort at Hillside House Shenandoah

☕️ Start Your Day in Luray with Coffee & Charm

10 Minutes Away

Before heading up the mountain, fuel your adventure with a stop at Broad Porch Coffee Co., just 10 minutes from the house in the heart of downtown Luray. This cozy, artsy café roasts their own beans and serves up smooth lattes, herbal teas, and a small selection of house-made pastries. It’s a great place to ease into your day or grab a cup to go.

Pro Tip: Grab an extra treat for the trail—or enjoy your coffee on the porch back at Hillside House if you want a slower morning surrounded by nature.

🚗 Enter the Park in Minutes from Hillside House

From our front door, you're just 15 minutes to the Thornton Gap Entrance of Shenandoah National Park. The drive winds past open fields and rolling hills before leading you right onto Skyline Drive, the park’s scenic backbone.

No long drives or backtracking required—just pack your day bag and head out.

🥾 Morning Hike: Mary’s Rock Trail

One of our favorite hikes near the Thornton Gap Entrance is the Mary’s Rock Trail via Meadow Spring (milepost 33.5). It’s a 3.7-mile roundtrip hike with moderate elevation, beautiful shaded forest, and sweeping 180-degree views at the summit—perfect for photos and a peaceful snack break.

You’ll be hiking above the valley you woke up in, with views that stretch for miles on a clear day.

🧺 Picnic with a View: Pinnacles Overlook

After your hike, drive a few miles south on Skyline Drive to Pinnacles Overlook (milepost 35.1). With panoramic mountain views, flat grassy spots, and picnic tables, it’s an ideal stop for lunch. We recommend packing a cooler at Hillside House with sandwiches, local fruit, and snacks from the Luray farmers market (held seasonally on Saturdays).

No time to prep? Stop at West Main Market Deli in Luray (right next to your morning coffee run - Broad Porch!!) for ready-to-go sandwiches and sides.

🌲 Afternoon Hike: Limberlost or Stony Man Trail

Next up: stretch your legs with a lighter, scenic trail. If you’re looking for something easy and peaceful, the Limberlost Trail (milepost 43) is a 1.3-mile accessible loop through shady groves with educational signs and benches to rest along the way.

Want a bigger view without a long trek? Stony Man Trail (milepost 41.7) is only 1.6 miles roundtrip and leads to one of the highest summits in the park with jaw-dropping views that rival longer hikes.

Both trails are less than 20 minutes from Thornton Gap and make for the perfect post-lunch stroll - and also great for the whole family!

🎁 Souvenirs at Skyland Gift Shop

Before leaving the park, stop by Skyland Resort’s Gift Shop (also at milepost 41.7).

It’s a great place to pick up locally made souvenirs, including Shenandoah-themed mugs, pottery, art, and apparel. It’s a cozy and curated space that supports local artisans while helping you take a piece of your trip home.

🍷🍺 Unwind After Your Adventure: Wisteria Vineyard or Coal Ridge Brewery (Both Under 20 Minutes Away)

You’ve earned a relaxing drink—and thankfully there are two great options close to Hillside House:

🍷 Wisteria Farm & Vineyard

(18 minutes away)

This peaceful, family-owned winery in Stanley, VA is a local favorite. Sip their award-winning Norton or Traminette on the patio surrounded by vines, mountains, and even a few free-roaming chickens. It’s pet-friendly, low-key, and a perfect spot to relax as the sun sets.

🍺 Coal Ridge Brewery

(12 minutes away in downtown Luray)

If beer is more your vibe, Coal Ridge Brewery serves up craft brews with character. From hoppy IPAs to rich porters, the rotating tap list has something for everyone. The friendly atmosphere, occasional food trucks, and live music make it a great place to toast your adventure.

🏡 Return to Hillside House for Sunset

After a full day on the trails, there’s nothing like returning to Hillside House, where you can kick off your boots, take in the mountain air from the front porch, and relax with a glass of something good as the sun dips below the mountain and the stars come out.

With its central location, dog-friendly vibe, and cozy amenities, Hillside House is the ideal basecamp for Shenandoah adventures—whether you're planning a full week of hiking or a weekend escape.
